meta
People say meta to talk about something that refers back to itself. A TV show where characters know they are in a show is meta. A conversation about the conversation you just had is also meta.
What a model may hear
- HTML meta tag web development
- inject metadata, set character encoding, or control page behavior like refresh or viewport scaling
- meta object or metaclass programming, especially Python and Lisp
- treat the class or object structure as data that can be inspected or modified at runtime
- meta-analysis or metadata data science and research
- aggregate results across studies, or describe properties of a dataset rather than its contents
- Meta Platforms business and tech news
- refer to the company formerly named Facebook, triggering associations with social media policies or products
- meta-learning machine learning
- train a model to learn how to learn, or adapt quickly to new tasks from few examples
Where people and models part ways
“Make it meta”
Meant: Add self-aware commentary or a layer of abstraction
May be taken as: Insert HTML meta tags, generate metadata schemas, or restructure code around metaclasses
Say instead: “Add self-referential jokes or commentary about the format itself”
“What's the meta?”
Meant: What is the current dominant strategy or trend?
May be taken as: Explain HTML metadata standards or summarize Meta's corporate strategy
Say instead: “What strategy or approach is most effective right now in this game or field?”
“Go meta on this”
Meant: Step back and analyze the structure or patterns
May be taken as: Generate code using metaclasses or produce a formal metadata specification
Say instead: “Analyze the underlying structure and patterns rather than the surface content”
“Meta description”
Meant: A summary that describes itself or the work
May be taken as: Write an HTML meta name='description' tag for SEO
Say instead: “A self-aware summary that comments on its own purpose or limitations”
Tips
- Say self-referential if you mean commentary about itself, not meta
- Specify HTML tag or SEO metadata if that is what you want
- Say Meta with a capital M if you mean the company
- Use meta-analysis only for combining research studies
- Try about the structure or one level up if meta feels unclear
